We have had our solar PV and hot water for almost 3 years. We moved to this new house about 3.5 years ago and are served by Pacific Gas and Electric here for both those utilities. In our previous home of 24 years we had electricity from a "public utility/nonprofit." Our first month bill in this new house was for almost exactly the same total kW as our last month in the old house and here the bill was FOUR times higher !!! We have been incredibly pleased with how our solar panels function. We have totally wiped out our annual electricity use costs (though we still pay a "grid connect fee" of about $13/month), and our system generated a "credit" of $438 for our "excess production over use" last year (though wonderful PG&E will not have to pay us for that). Based on that credit outcome last year, I am projecting that even charging both EVs, using the off-peak special EV rate we are now applying, we will still have ZERO annual actual electricity "use" fee. Once one goes Solar PV with PG&E the electricity charges for useage are paid only at the end of each YEAR. Our gas bill, with the solar hot water system is about HALF of what it would be without that augmentation.

Comparing the Volt to the LEAF:

LEAF better: 1. EV total is better than any fuel use and I am getting about 90 miles range in our mild California winter.
2. Much more room in the back seat, more "open feeling" interior.
3. Of course, WAY cheaper, and the California $5000 rebate makes it even better !!!
4. I actually like the look and feel of the cloth interior.
5. We have the Quick Charge port, and that system works really well (when you can find one).

Volt better: 1. Draws more attention, much less generic looking.
2. Feels like it has a bit more power.
3. I like the center display better for power feedback/use
4. The GPS maps are more up to date, as they have our current neighborhood and streets
5. Onstar is handy for the concierge service.
6. Volt actually works well for "road trips" of at least 200-300 miles.

p.s. I am also a MSU grad. (M.A., Ph.D. 1965-1969, the really good football years !)
